The waiting name

Hedy and Clare have been working on a Christmas theme for the cabinet in the foyer.  They are using the verse from Isaiah 9:6; For a child has been born for us, a Son given to us; authority rests upon His shoulders; and He is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Imagine the people of Israel waiting for hundreds of years for someone who would have names like that.  There were so many times in their history that they needed a Prince of Peace.  They would have been waiting with their eyes wide open for someone like that.

This verse comes to us at a time where we are waiting for Christmas.  There are all sorts of names for the Christmas we are looking for:  a holly jolly Christmas, a silent night Christmas, a merry Christmas, a blessed Christmas, a fun-filled Christmas, a tasty Christmas, a busy Christmas.  What kind of Christmas are you expecting?

Christmas can be many things, but first and foremost, I hope that we experience Christmas in the truest sense of the name.  That it is a Christ-filled Christ-mas.  That we encounter the Wonderful counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace Christmas.  I hope that advent is filled with waiting for God, waiting with our eyes wide open.

This week’s prayer:  As we launch this advent season, help us to wait simply, purely and devotedly for your presence in our world.  Help us to be your presence in the world.
