Do you remember the big moment in the movie The Wizard of Oz, where Dorothy discovers that the wizard is nothing other than a simple man with a big projection screen? She uncovers the booth where he is projecting big images of himself, and uncovers him for what he is. In that story, the man was incognito as a big powerful being. Dorothy had to discover the truth.
I was thinking of that story this week, when I thought about God and the big reveal. When God decided to be revealed to human beings, the opposite approach was taken. Instead of appearing in glory and power and majesty, God appeared as a simple human being. Through his life, death and resurrection, Jesus was revealed as the Son of God. God wasn’t trying to hide anything from us, God was unveiling something in a way that we could understand, in a way that we could imitate. The big reveal was not a huge disappointment, but a wonderful unveiling.
This week we are going to be talking together about revelation…about how God is revealed in our lives. How do we meet God in the everyday?
This week’s prayer: Open our eyes to your presence in our lives, in our community, in our world. Thank you that you are a God who wants to be known. Amen.
