Our word for the day this Sunday is sanctify. This is an old word that means to make holy.
We don`t talk about wanting to be holy very much. Maybe it sounds too “holier than thou”, too self-righteous. And the word sanctify sounds a whole lot like the word sanctimonious. Which also means being self-righteous…the definition I found says “a hypocritical show of religious devotion”. If that’s what sanctimonious means, isn’t the word sanctify tainted by association?
This week I’m going to do a little survey of what this biblical word means, and give an example of someone who lived out this word. Maybe the word sanctify could be good news for us. Maybe it is an invitation that we won’t want to miss, an invitation from Jesus.
I hope that’s an invitation to come to church this Sunday. See you there!
This week’s prayer: Holy sounds like a pretty tall order, God. Can I be holy? Is that even a possibility? Can Jesus show me the way?
